iPhone 14 Pro will feature Always-On display, iOS 16 brings lock screen widgets

The iPhone 14 Pro models are widely expected to feature area always-on displays, allowing users to view some basic information without having to tap to wake the screen. The feature will include support for new lock screen widgets in iOS 16, including weather, fitness, and more, Mark Gurman said in the latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg.

“As the Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 Pro will be able to display gadgets that display weather, calendar, stocks, events, and other data while maintaining low brightness and frame rate,” Gurman wrote. “And there will be a setting — also like the Apple Watch — to keep sensitive data off the lock screen for everyone to see.”

The always-on display may also show the time, date, and unread notification indicators. Consistent with the Apple Watch, which has had an always-on display mode since the Series 5, Apple will likely give users the option to enable or disable the always-on display feature on iPhone 14 Pro models through the Settings app.

As Gurman mentioned, the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display mode preserves battery life with a combination of low brightness and a low refresh rate. ProMotion, introduced on the iPhone 13 Pro models, allows the display to drop to 10Hz when idle, and display industry analyst Ross Young predicts that the iPhone 14 Pro models may drop to 1Hz like the Apple Watch to further improve energy efficiency.

Without any major supply chain disruptions, Apple will likely unveil its iPhone 14 lineup around September as usual. Only the Pro and Pro Max models are expected to feature an always-on display, but the feature could trickle down to standard models in the future.

Gurman also said that Apple is planning a new Mac mini with an M2 Pro chip, a new Apple TV with an A14 chip, an improved HomePod, and more.
