Apple’s ultrasonic touch technology patent: Wet hands/gloves can also interact with AirPods

Apple has been granted a patent for an advanced ultrasonic touch sensor, according to the latest patent published by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office. According to the patent Apple, the patent will apply to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, which can better interact with the device when wet hands or wearing gloves.

Currently, AirPods devices struggle to maintain the same performance when exposed to moisture. Additionally, AirPods Pro sensors tend not to work properly when the user is wearing gloves. This improved performance will help users wear gloves during winter.

“Ultrasonic touch-sensing systems are less affected when a conductive, electrically-floating liquid (such as a water droplet) or an insulating object (such as a gloved finger) is in contact with its touch-sensitive surface,” the patent reads.

Apple’s patent application includes “ultrasonic touch-sensing capabilities” that could be used in future AirPods models. In addition, ultrasonic technology can improve the touch accuracy of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.
