TweetDeck on macOS stopped supporting the web today

In 2011, Twitter acquired TweetDeck for $40 million. Over the past 11 years, Twitter has shut down the TweetDeck app. First the iOS, Android and Adobe Air apps were discontinued in 2013, then the Windows platform was shut down in 2016, and now the Mac side is finally discontinued.

Earlier this month, the TweetDeck team confirmed in a tweet that the Mac app would be shutting down soon. Anyone using the macOS version of the TweetDeck app also received a banner notification at the time informing them of the message.

As the team explained in a tweet, the macOS app has been retired so they can “focus on making TweetDeck even better.” It’s the same reason Twitter has used to justify shutting down the app in the past. The only way to use TweetDeck right now is through the web app. You can access TweetDeck on the web here.

The move was met with backlash from countless power users, pleading with Twitter to change its plans. Others are requesting access to a new preview of the updated TweetDeck web client. Those who received a response were told “Invitations to preview will continue as we expand over the next few months.” Here’s what the new version looks like:

There is at least one solid alternative worth checking out. Some users who responded to TweetDeck’s tweet mentioned another separate app called Tweeten.
