Sony PSVR2 headset will use Tobii eye-tracking tech

In a recent press release, Sweden-based tech group Tobii revealed that the Sony PlayStation VR2 will use its eye-tracking technology. The company had announced in February 2022 that it had held talks. Anand Srivatsa, CEO of Tobii said:

“PlayStation VR2 sets a new benchmark for immersive virtual reality (VR) entertainment and will enable millions of users around the world to experience the power of eye-tracking. Our partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment SIE will continue to demonstrate Tobii’s world-leading technological capabilities ( in providing cutting-edge solutions for the mass market).”

Revenue from the deal will reportedly account for more than 10% of Tobii’s full-year revenue. The report notes that the “rapid development of the virtual reality industry” means that revenue contribution forecasts beyond 2022 are uncertain. As such, the company couldn’t provide any details about its revenue potential next year.

This isn’t the first time Tobii’s technology has been used in a VR headset, as the company has previously designed a standalone VR device for Qualcomm. Its technology is also used in devices such as the HTC Vive Pro Eye, HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition, and Pico Neo 3 ProEye. The PlayStation VR2 will now join the lineup as well, but the company hasn’t said when the device will launch.

Sony hasn’t announced pricing for the device yet, although the company will reveal details in the coming months.
