Chromecast: Powerful new YouTube app discontinued after just seven months, Google is pulling the plug

Users of the Chromecast with Google TV have just been able to look forward to an update, but bad news follows for owners of the older generations: The new YouTube app for the classic Chromecast, which was only launched a few months ago, will be discontinued these days and support for the Dongles thus significantly reduced. Users are not happy.

The Google Chromecast is a popular product that, especially in the first generations, was able to inspire with numerous updates that brought new functions with it again and again. Although even the newest dongle will soon be celebrating its second birthday and will only have a disappointing successor, the first generations have not been forgotten either.

Last year, users of the Chromecast without Google TV could look forward to the new interactive YouTube app, which is displayed on the television and controlled with the smartphone (due to the lack of remote control). This was a very big step and made using the Chromecast a lot more convenient. But apparently, the teams between Chromecast and YouTube had not agreed on schedules and future steps. Because the app is history again.

Since the last update, many users have no longer been able to use this YouTube app and therefore have to choose the classic route. In other words: Operate the app on your smartphone and only send the video stream to the television. You can see what the then-new and now-old apps looked like in the following short animation.

It’s not like they took something away from users that they paid for. Because the new player was only rolled out years after the start of sales and was not mentioned in the various product descriptions. Nevertheless, it is of course annoying if you only show what is still in this hardware in December 2021 and then discontinue it a few months later. And without any need, because it worked.

And as you can see from the second tweet, the YouTube team probably didn’t know either that the Chromecast had lost this functionality…
