An electric Lamborghini is coming in 2028

Volkswagen AG is currently preparing the brands for electromobility, but it will take a while for Lamborghini. The new boss is supposed to take Lamborghini with him into the electric age, but that will take a few more years.

Lamborghini relies on electric SUVs

In an interview with Autocar, Stephan Winkelmann revealed that the move to an electric car will not take place until 2028. The brand has consistently said it won’t happen before 2027, and they’re sticking to that. But what is planned?

It starts with a “crossover SUV”, albeit a completely new model. This will not replace the Lamborghini Urus, which should also come shortly afterward as a purely electric version. The brand is therefore fully committed to electric SUVs.

Lamborghini is also hoping for e-fuels

Lamborghini is hoping that e-fuels and upcoming hybrid models might help it continue to build small-scale combustion engines, but new EU regulations could make that difficult from 2035 onwards.

This is still being debated, but so that the brand has a future, there will initially be two purely electric models by 2030. If other markets remain open to a combustion engine, it is possible that Lamborghini will remain active here.

According to Stephan Winkelmann, the market is currently changing, so you have to see how you react from year to year. Of course, Lamborghini is also under some pressure from Volkswagen AG, because they are now fully committed to electromobility.

Luxury electric SUVs instead of sports cars

The future for luxury sports car manufacturers is currently going in one direction: purely electric and SUV. It’s no different with manufacturers like McLaren. At the end of the day, every brand caters to global demand.

And with the Urus now the bestseller, it’s moving on to electric SUVs.

Incidentally, the current models from Lamborghini (Aventador, Huracán and Urus) will all be available as hybrid versions by the end of 2024. The brand wants to comply with the CO2 values. It is also noted that customers now also want this. Sister brand Porsche is already very successful with the Taycan.
