Linux Mint 21 Vanessa Beta Released

The Linux Mint 21 “Vanessa” beta release was officially released today. The new version is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. In addition to the Cinnamon version, there are MATE and Xfce flavored versions for users to choose from. In addition to upgrading to the Cinnamon 5.4 desktop environment, today’s Linux Mint 21 Beta release introduces many updates from upstream Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and tweaks many details.

This includes replacing Blueman with Blueberry for Bluetooth processing, enabling a new Xapp thumbnail component for handling WebP / AppImage / ePub / MP3 / RAW file types, adding process monitoring when reporting automated updates and system screenshots in the background, Improvements to art and style, improvements to XApps programs, and more.

The Cinnamon 5.4 desktop environment is re-based on the “Muffin” compiler code based on the Mutter 3.36 upstream code and introduces various window management improvements, GTK antialiasing is now used for all windows and not just CSD windows, better Window animations and tons of desktop improvements.

  • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for comfortable usage).
  • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
  • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

Upgrade instructions:

  • This BETA release might contain critical bugs, please only use it for testing purposes and to help the Linux Mint team fix issues prior to the stable release.
  • Upgrade instructions will be published after the stable release of Linux Mint 21.
  • It will be possible to upgrade from this BETA to a stable release.
  • It will also be possible to upgrade from Linux Mint 20.3.
