Shopping on Instagram now lands directly on the app’s private messages

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today announced the introduction of a feature that will allow Instagram users to purchase and pay for goods directly within so-called Direct Messages.

The announcement came today directly from the CEO himself in the form of an Instagram post on his personal profile and reads: “Now it will be possible to buy products from small businesses and monitor your order in chat on Instagram in the United States. Pay with Meta Pay and checkout in just a few taps. ”

Instagram embraces shopping in private messages

Thanks to this addition – which for now will be available exclusively in the United States – users will be able to finalize the purchase of an item, make the payment, track the order and receive in-app assistance related to their purchase without ever leaving the conversation with the seller.

Moreover, according to some data released by Meta, every week up to a billion users between Facebook and Instagram contact small businesses online for information about the purchase of goods and products, therefore the addition of a function that would streamline the process. of buying and selling in the app would seem more than apt.

With a mechanism similar to that already present in some online shopping services such as Vinted and Subito, the seller will be able to create a payment request which, if accepted by the buyer, will be processed through PayPal and Meta Pay, the online payment service of Meta, born with the name of Facebook Pay.

Although Meta Pay retains the same functions as Facebook Pay, guaranteeing an identical experience to the previous one through the Meta platforms, the payment service has quite other ambitions. In fact, as stated by Zuckerberg himself, Meta Pay in the future will aim to become the digital wallet of the metaverse thanks to which users will be able to manage and store their digital assets and their virtual identity in complete safety.
