Google Pixel: Outlook on the next 12 updates

While we’re sitting and waiting in the summer slump, let’s take a look at upcoming updates for the Google Pixel. A lot could still happen in the middle of summer. Google has been following a clear strategy for some time, so it’s easy for us to see exactly what the update plans for the coming months will be. We want to explain this to you in a nutshell. When will which updates for Google Pixel come in the coming months?

Google Pixel: Up to 12 updates by the end of the year

There will continue to be a general Android security patch every new month. The update planned for the Google Pixel could then bring new bug fixes depending on the month. There could be a lot of bug fixes from September to December because new Pixel phones are being launched during this time and also a new Android version.

Last year’s December update included over 80 bug fixes for all eligible Google phones. We also receive the Google System Updates monthly. It also contains larger and more decisive innovations. Recently, for example, the restart of Google Wallet was included.

Android 13: Launch this summer

The next big Android update is due in the next few weeks. Version 13 should be ready in the summer and we expect a rollout for Google Pixel in September at the latest. Therefore, there will be no new Pixel Feature Drop (quarterly) during this period. Android 13 should be enough for us.

But we expect a new beta in September or October. Then Pixel owners can install the Android 13 QPR1 Beta if they wish. This will test the first Pixel Feature Drop for Android 13 before the update comes out in December. It is absolutely impossible to predict today what extent is to be expected.

This is what it could look like by December:

July – August

  • Google System Updates
  • Android Security Bulletin
  • Android 13 Beta 4 ( already released )
  • Android 13 final Release ab Pixel 4

September – November

  • Google System Updates
  • Android Security Bulletin
  • Android 13 QPR1 Beta

December

  • Google System Updates
  • Android Security Bulletin
  • Pixel Feature Drop (Android 13 QPR1)
  • Android Feature Drop (new for Google apps)

During this period, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will fall out of their update guarantee (October). Android 13 is still available as an update, but the first-pixel feature drop may no longer be available.
