About Chromebooks reports that in an effort to improve ChromeOS’s online security, Google is developing an indicator for Chromebook users that shows password strength. Kevin C. Tofel noted that the change was discovered in the ChromiumOS code last Wednesday as an experimental feature.
He was still using the Dev Channel’s ChromeOS 105 version, which didn’t yet have a flag to enable the password strength indicator. However, after the introduction of the code, interested friends can access it through chrome://flags#password-strength-indicator.
Password strength has long been a fairly common feature for third-party password managers, such as 1Password, which prompts you when creating and viewing passwords.
As shown in the figure below, the plug-in will display a horizontal bar at the top of the web page, prompting the user that the password is too weak (too easy to guess), and at the bottom of the password input box, different color lengths are used to display the strength.
The Password Strength Indicator helps encourage users to create more secure passwords (longer green bars, or green circles) through the visual display of the Chrome browser extension. Of course, this is just one of Google’s efforts to make ChromeOS more secure online. In ChromeOS 101, for example, the company introduced the ability to save password notes.
In addition, in the earlier ChromeOS 79 version, Google also added a password check function. When the detected login credentials are involved in a data breach, the user will be alerted in a timely manner.
