Google and Apple are teaming up

Google and Apple are teaming up to create a specification that will prevent people from being tracked using Bluetooth tags. Bluetooth location tracking tags help users find personal items through crowdsourced finding networks. But there have been cases with unwanted tracking of people.

To combat the misuse of Bluetooth location tracking tags, Google and Apple have jointly introduced a proposed industry specification. It would allow such devices to be compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts across Android and iOS platforms. Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security and Pebblebee have already expressed support for the project.

Based on the feedback, Google and Apple will release a production implementation of the specification for unwanted tracking alerts by the end of 2023 that will then be supported in future versions of Android and iOS.
