SMS functionality affected by iOS 17 Beta 1 for certain users

Apple’s highly anticipated iOS 17 was unveiled during the WWDC 2023 event on June 5, followed by the immediate availability of its first beta version for eager users to download. However, reports have emerged indicating that some individuals who have installed the beta are experiencing issues.

At the forefront of these concerns is a problem affecting the delivery of SMS messages to non-iPhone users, while iMessages seem to remain unaffected. Multiple sources have revealed that attempting to send an SMS through iOS 17 prompts an error message, indicating that the message was “not delivered.” However, the situation may not be as straightforward as it initially seems.

Despite these error messages, various Reddit users have shared their experiences, suggesting that the messages are actually being transmitted successfully. Recipients continue to receive the messages as intended, which is the primary objective. Regrettably, due to the lack of a delivery confirmation feature, verifying this without contacting the recipient directly poses a challenge, somewhat undermining the purpose of the error notification.

One user on Reddit commented, “I had no issues sending texts until suddenly they failed to send, yet the recipient received multiple copies of the same text. I’m using ATT, by the way.” Another user added, “Interestingly, my friend confirmed receiving the message, although it still displays as undelivered on my end.”

It is important to emphasize that this is merely the initial beta release of iOS 17, and encountering bugs is to be expected. We strongly advise limiting the installation of iOS 17 to test devices exclusively, cautioning against installing it on devices that are crucial to day-to-day operations.

Apple has yet to disclose the precise date of the public release for iOS 17, but it is anticipated to occur in or around September. Coinciding with this launch, Apple is also expected to unveil the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineups.
