Gmail for Android underwent a subtle adjustment recently, enhancing its notification system to incorporate Dynamic Color theming, thereby eliminating the default red icon. The latest release, version 2023.05.28.x, introduced this modification, primarily focusing on the app icon displayed within notifications. In the past, the outline of Gmail’s iconic “M” emblem was situated against a red backdrop, a nod to the app’s historical color scheme that persisted until the Workspace rebrand in October 2020.
Following the update, the notification icon now blends seamlessly with the background, aligning itself with the Dynamic Color theme chosen by the user. This change brings about greater consistency in appearance, harmonizing with the overall aesthetic of the Android device.

Nevertheless, this alteration has not gone unnoticed, and there appears to be a shared sentiment regarding the downside of diminished visibility for Gmail notifications. The tiny red dot that previously commanded attention seems to have had a more significant impact than anticipated.
Having had the opportunity to experience the themed notification icon for a day or so, it becomes apparent that Gmail alerts now tend to be somewhat inconspicuous within the notification shade and on the lock screen. This effect is particularly pronounced in the case of single email alerts, although they still benefit from the inclusion of the sender’s profile picture on the right.
While the decision to prioritize uniformity and adhere more closely to the Material You design language is evident, it is worth considering the case for exceptions, considering the historical significance and importance of email alerts.
It is important to note that consistent theming can result in a lack of visual diversity, engendering a broader discussion on the desire of certain apps, particularly third-party ones, to distinguish themselves from the broader system in order to attract greater usage and engagement.
