iPhone 16 Pro unlikely to incorporate solid-state buttons, analyst suggests

In a recent research note by Jeff Pu, a technology analyst at Haitong International Securities, it has been indicated that the chances of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max featuring solid-state volume and mute buttons are now deemed “low.” Pu’s prediction accompanies his insights on the forthcoming iPhone 15 lineup.

Initially, there were rumors of solid-state buttons for the iPhone 15 Pro models. However, Apple reportedly encountered unresolved technical challenges during the mass production phase, leading them to revert to mechanical buttons. Pu had previously anticipated that solid-state buttons would be postponed until the iPhone 16 Pro models. However, he now expresses doubt regarding their inclusion in these upcoming devices.

Apple’s supplier, Cirrus Logic, had previously hinted at the incorporation of solid-state buttons in a shareholder letter last year. However, in May, they seemingly confirmed that these plans had been abandoned.

The proposed design for the iPhone 15 Pro entailed buttons that did not physically move when pressed. Instead, rumors suggested that two additional Taptic Engines within the iPhone would provide haptic feedback, simulating the sensation of button movement. This concept is reminiscent of the Home button introduced in the iPhone 7 and the Force Touch trackpad found in newer MacBook models.

While the iPhone 15 Pro models are still expected to possess a mechanical Action button in place of the Ring/Silent switch, it is likely that users will have the ability to assign various system functions to this button, such as Ring/Silent or Do Not Disturb.

As the likelihood of solid-state buttons being included in iPhones until 2024 diminishes, it remains uncertain whether Apple will eventually transition away from mechanical buttons on their devices. The advantages of solid-state buttons would include reduced susceptibility to damage, given the absence of moving parts, as well as potential improvements in water resistance due to fewer entry points.

Considering that the launch of iPhone 16 Pro models is still over a year away, Apple’s plans for these devices are subject to potential alterations.
