Fitbit Charge 5 update results in severe battery drain and tracker malfunction

Fitbit’s popular fitness tracker, the Charge 5, has encountered a significant issue following a recent software update, leading to battery drain and device malfunction for some users.

Approximately two weeks ago, Fitbit rolled out a software update (version 194.61) for the Charge 5. Although it was primarily intended to enhance the device’s exercise app by incorporating all exercise modes, display the Daily Readiness Score for Premium subscribers, expand language support, improve clock faces, and address various bugs, it has unfortunately caused problems for certain Charge 5 owners, as reported on a forum thread.

One prominent issue, as brought to light by Android Authority, is an alarming battery drain affecting the device. Typically designed to last several days on a single charge, some users have reported their Charge 5 devices depleting within a day or less after installing the update. Moreover, a more significant concern has arisen as some units have become completely inoperable and unresponsive, effectively bricking the device.

Regrettably, Fitbit appears to have inadequately addressed the matter for affected users. Support has not offered device replacements but rather a 35% discount on new hardware, on the assumption that the tracker is still within the warranty period. While the Charge 5 was only launched in 2021, Fitbit’s warranty policy only covers the device for one year from the date of purchase. However, given that the device malfunction stems from Fitbit’s own update, it is expected that the company should provide a complimentary solution for impacted users.

Considering the circumstances, it is advisable to disable the auto-update feature on your Charge 5 if the faulty update has not been installed yet. As of now, neither Google nor Fitbit have issued any official statements regarding this issue.
