Gmail for Android introduces enhanced navigation rail for foldable devices

Gmail has recently unveiled a notable user interface (UI) update for foldable devices, presenting a practical navigation rail within the application.

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance support for larger screens, Gmail for Android has incorporated a significant adjustment. The introduction of a new sidebar positions the “compose” button for drafting new emails along the side of the UI, departing from its previous placement as a floating action button. Additionally, the bottom bar has been relocated to the side, featuring convenient shortcuts for inbox, chat, and meet functionalities.

Although this fresh UI made a brief appearance in May, it is now being actively rolled out for the first time.

Remarkably, this particular UI enhancement seems to be exclusively available on foldable devices. While we have observed the new UI on a Google Pixel Fold (app version 2023.06.11.542368486), the same update is not visible on Gmail for Pixel Tablet. Similarly, it does not appear on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, as the taller aspect ratio of Samsung’s device does not trigger the tablet interface until it is rotated.

The implementation of this navigation rail in Gmail for foldable devices mirrors a trend observed in Google’s other tablet designs. Applications such as the Play Store, Google Home, and Photos have effectively relocated their bottom bars to the side, capitalizing on the additional horizontal screen space. Given Gmail’s existing sidebar interface on a desktop, this adaptation feels especially fitting.

If you are utilizing a foldable device or tablet and have encountered this new UI, we encourage you to share your experience in the comments section below. Stay up to date with the latest Gmail updates by checking the Play Store regularly.
