Android Auto update presents persistence of Google Maps app beyond vehicle usage

Recent updates to Android Auto and Google Maps have introduced an inconvenient software glitch that maintains the active state of the navigation app even after the user exits the vehicle.

Following the release of Android Auto version 10.0, users have observed an unexpected behavior whereby Google Maps remains operational despite the termination of the Android Auto session. Traditionally, when a smartphone is connected to the vehicle’s infotainment system, Android Auto automatically launches Google Maps, allowing users to utilize navigation features. However, since the recent updates, this functionality persists even when the user has left the vehicle.

Consequently, users encounter an ongoing Google Maps notification on their Android devices, providing continuous updates on their navigation status. This notification persists until the user manually selects the “exit navigation” option.

Personally, I have experienced this issue on my Google Pixel Fold running Android Auto v10.0, alongside Google Maps v11.88, for nearly a week. Likewise, various individuals on Reddit have reported encountering the same problem with Samsung and Pixel phones, both when using wired connections and wireless adapters such as the Motorola MA1 or AAWireless.

Although this issue can be resolved by selecting the “exit navigation” option, it is nevertheless an inconvenience that warrants attention and resolution.
