Windows 10 KB5034441 0x80070643 bug

Microsoft has recently released WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) updates for Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 versions in January this year to address security vulnerabilities that may allow attackers to use WinRE to bypass BitLocker encryption.

However, while this update fixes some bugs, it also brings other bugs. Microsoft stated that this update requires at least 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition to successfully install, otherwise you will see the 0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE error.

Microsoft had previously promised to develop a fix for the issue, but now says it will not release a fix for the issue, at least not for Windows 10 systems. But the good news is: if your PC does not have a WinRE partition, you can completely skip installing this update.

To verify whether WinRE is enabled, you can run the command “reagentc /info” with administrator rights in the command prompt. If WinRE is enabled, the Windows RE status value will be displayed as “Enabled”.

Although Microsoft does not plan to launch a fix, we can also solve the problem manually. If you have already encountered this bug, you manually adjust the RE partition size to more than 250 MB, and then try to install the update again.
