Epic Games experts say iOS could same as macOS

According to the reports, an expert witness from Epic Games put forward an argument that Apple can make iOS more like macOS in terms of app release and third-party access, without being compromised in terms of security. In Friday’s testimony, James Mickens, a professor of computer science at Harvard University, stated to Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers the difference between iOS and macOS.

It is reported that some of the key differentiating areas come from security, application distribution and third-party application access. For example, Mickens said that compared with iOS’s built-in defenses, Apple’s App Review process provides minimal security benefits.

When Judge Gonzalez Rogers asked whether iOS is more secure than macOS, Mickens said that he did not think iOS was more secure. Mickens said that opening the iOS system to third-party app stores will not make a significant difference in the security experience. In addition, he added that if Apple opens iOS, it will not prevent users from only getting apps from the App Store.

When talking about the involvement of third parties, Judge Gonzalez Rogers said that Mickens made a good point, but she also expressed her personal concerns about numbers. Micken also stated in his testimony that it is only easy to port security features such as malware scanning and notarization to the iOS system.

Mickens’ testimony defended Epic Games’ key argument against the iOS App Store. Epic pointed out that although Apple did not enforce the same restrictions on the Mac, Apple stated that both iOS and macOS are safe and reliable. However, this apparent separation may weaken Apple’s claim that security and privacy are at the core of the iOS App Store rules. The Harvard University professor will provide more testimony next Monday.
