Google has finally added the ability to rearrange tabs using keyboard shortcuts in Chrome for Windows. This feature has been available on Linux and macOS for years, and now it’s expected to make its way to Chrome for Windows. In the latest update to Chrome Canary 102, dedicated shortcuts for moving tabs on the tab strip appeared. Press Ctrl + Shift + Page Up/Down to move the current page to the left or right.
This new shortcut joins other handy keys to navigate the browser faster, like Ctrl+Page Up/Down to switch between tabs, Ctrl+W to close a page, or Ctrl+T to open a new page.
Many of the new features that Google brings to its browser will end up on other Chromium-based browsers like Edge or Vivaldi. However, the latest Edge Canary version doesn’t allow you to use the Ctrl + Page Up/Down shortcut to move tabs on the tab strip, hopefully, Microsoft will add it in a future update.
Google is also working on other improvements and features for the Chrome browser. For example, the browser will soon allow adding annotations to web pages and storing those annotations in a dedicated side panel. The latest Chrome Canary version already allows users to access web page notes alongside bookmarks and reading lists, and another notable addition is the ability to save groups of tabs as bookmarks.
Despite rival efforts to catch up to Google, a steady stream of new features, superior compatibility, and higher code quality keep Chrome the most popular browser with over 67 percent of the market. Microsoft Edge is the closest Chrome browser competitor in the desktop market but is far behind with a 9.65 percent share.
