Apple has reportedly commissioned South Korean manufacturer LG Innotek to mass-produce a selfie camera belonging to the iPhone 14. According to the latest report, this will be the first time in the history of the iPhone that this responsibility has been taken on by a South Korean supplier.
The South Korean manufacturer initially received an order to supply Apple with camera parts for the iPhone 15, but according to ETNews, Apple has accelerated its progress quite aggressively. Apparently, the reason behind this decision has to do with the problems that arose during the quality testing phase of using camera parts produced by Chinese suppliers.
In addition to supplying parts for the iPhone 14’s selfie camera, LG Innotek will also mass-produce the main camera. So far, the California-based giant has two suppliers for selfie camera parts; LG Innotek and Sharp. The report said the order was split between the two manufacturers but did not say whether the two companies would produce camera parts of the same quality.
Various reports, leaks, and other forms of evidence suggest that the cameras on the iPhone 14 series will receive a major upgrade. For example, previous news leaked that all iPhone 14 models have reserved holes for camera modules at the rear of the fuselage. Compared with previous versions, they are significantly larger in size, so it is implied that the iPhone 14 will be a larger ‘s camera.
However, previous rumors said that only the more expensive versions, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, could get the 48-megapixel sensor upgrade. But the downside is that the 48-megapixel camera will result in a higher bump on the back, so users have to make up for the change by repurchasing the phone to make the back flush with the accessory. While there is currently no information on the maximum supported video recording resolution for the iPhone 14’s selfie camera, the major 48-megapixel upgrade will likely get 8K video recording support, a first for an iPhone.
The iPhone 14 series is expected to launch in September of this year, so we’ll see how Apple’s partnership with LG Innotek to produce selfie camera parts will improve imaging quality.
