2023 iPhones are expected to use periscope telephoto lenses

Tianfeng International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in a research report shared on Monday evening that Apple may introduce a periscope telephoto lens for the 2023 iPhone product line. Although there is no further explanation, we have heard rumors in this regard before. For users, this feature is expected to significantly improve the optical zoom experience of iPhone smartphones.

In the initial prediction, Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that Apple would introduce a periscope lens in the 2022 iPhone product line. But it now appears that the Cupertino-based giant has postponed new features until 2023.

Looking at the Android camp, Huawei’s P30 Pro series can already achieve 5X optical zoom. If Apple can introduce it for the first time in 2023, the new machine may have similar features. For reference, the current generation of iPhone only supports up to 2.5X optical zoom / 12X digital zoom. And Samsung’s flagship device is offering a hybrid zoom solution up to 100X.

Looking forward to 2023, Guo Mingchi also shared his detailed forecast for the 2021/2022 iPhone product line. First of all, the 2021 iPhone may adopt the new Face ID dot-matrix projection solution based on plastic (rather than glass), which is mainly due to the improvement of coating technology.

It is not yet clear how much benefit this technology will bring to Apple users, or just help Apple further reduce iPhone production costs. Previously, it was generally believed that the glass Tx lens material is to avoid deformation caused by the heat generated by the VCSEL operation.

But the latest MacRumors survey shows that the Face ID components in the second half of this year will be made of plastic. The suppliers of Tx plastic lenses are Largan and Genius, and the former benefits more.

In addition, Guo Mingchi predicts that the 2021 high-end iPhone models will be equipped with an upgraded telephoto lens. Through design and production advantages, Apple is expected to upgrade the 5P lens to the 6P version.

As for the 2022 high-end iPhone, Ming-Chi Kuo expects that the improvement of the rear camera will focus on the telephoto lens (upgrading from the 6P lens to the 7P version). Finally, Apple is expected to introduce a new “one-piece lens design” to reduce the size of the front camera module.
