OnePlus released three annual 5G new phones, OnePlus 9/9R and OnePlus 9 Pro

OnePlus launched its flagship new device lineup for 2021-the new OnePlus 9 series. This year, the company is perfecting its marketing strategy adopted after the successful OnePlus 8 series in 2020. It no longer only pursues a flagship phone a year but redoubles its efforts in all aspects so that the company’s equipment is no longer other manufacturers. Competitor, but directly in the best equipment available on the market.

OnePlus launched three devices today, the new OnePlus 9, the OnePlus 9 Pro, and the budget-oriented OnePlus 9R. OnePlus 9 Pro inherited the style of last year’s 8 Pro, is a fully-fledged flagship device this year, a plus again as this phone is equipped with the best display hardware available in the market.

In addition, changing the usual lineup of models, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro both use the same new generation of camera modules and sensors. OnePlus and Hasselblad have made great progress in photography and image quality-this is also past It has been recognized as a weak link of the company in several generations of products.

OnePlus spent a lot of time in the press conference talking about the cameras of the new phones, which were developed in cooperation with Hasselblad. OnePlus said that the colors have been adjusted to look more natural, and the ultra-wide sensor on the 9 Pro is one of the largest sensors ever on a smartphone.

The ultra-wide-angle uses a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor with a size of 1/1.56 inches and an aperture of f/2.2. At the same time, its flagship Sony IMX 789 sensor has a resolution of 48 million pixels and a size of 1/1.43″.

Thanks to OnePlus being used to pre-announce the flagship specifications of many devices, we have learned a lot about these two phones at this event. Pro has a 120Hz display and uses LPTO technology to adjust the refresh rate according to the content displayed on the screen. It can be charged with 50W wireless charging power or 65W wired connection power (normal 9 can only perform 15W wireless charging).

Starting with the new OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, both devices now use the new Snapdragon 888 SoC from Qualcomm. Although in terms of performance improvement, it may not be as big as we are used to in the past few years, it is the strongest in the industry anyway.

OnePlus has maintained a similar DRAM and memory configuration this year. The basic memory is 8GB or 12GB, and there are 128GB or 256GB storage options to choose from. The memory has been updated to a faster UFS 3.1 module.

OnePlus 9 Pro-the undisputed flagship

Let’s start with the new OnePlus 9 Pro announced today, which is today’s protagonist. This flagship model will integrate various new elements in this year’s new high-end flagship smartphone. However, it has not gone to the “Ultra” category of Samsung’s larger flagship Big Mac, 163.2 x 73.6mm. The size is still relatively medium size by today’s standards. In fact, it is 0.8mm narrower than the 8 Pro.

The design of this phone seems to closely follow the ergonomic principles of last year’s normal version of the OnePlus 8. It uses curved front display glass and back cover glass, but the curvatures on both sides are more symmetrical to each other. In contrast, 8 Pro’s front display arc design is more prominent.

This year OnePlus 9 Ori has switched to the updated LTPO panel technology, which supports hardware adaptive refresh rate, just like the one used in Samsung Note20 Ultra or the new S21 Ultra. As we have seen on these devices, hardware LFD/VRR is a way to boost the battery life of the device in 120Hz mode.

OnePlus advertises the new 8192 brightness level indicating that the new DDIC has 10-bit capability. OnePlus 9 Pro should be one of the best screens in the smartphone industry in 2021. One of the new features of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro is the new camera settings. It is quite different from the more attempts we have seen in the market, choosing a simpler but extremely stable camera configuration.

In terms of the main sensor, we see a new 48MP IMX789 sensor. The sensor has 1.22μm pixels and a Quad-Bayer color filter, which can split 12MP and 2.44μm effective pixels. The pixels here are 1.18 times larger than the sensor on the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Since the resolution remains the same, this means that the optical size of the sensor has grown to 1/1.31 inches. The approach here is very strange and unique is the 16:11 sensor, which is very different from the traditional 4:3 form factor we have seen on smartphones. A native 12-bit ADC capability unit is also ok. Increase the dynamic range that the module can capture.

The ultra-wide sensor on the new phone is also very interesting. The sensor is a 50MP IMX766. OPPO used the same 1.0μm pixel sensor in the main camera sensor of Find X3 Pro. When it can be split into 12.5MP shooting mode, the effective pixel size is 2μm.

In fact, the most interesting part of the ultra-wide-angle module here is not particularly the sensor, but the optical components. OnePlus uses advanced free-surface lens optical elements, capable of shooting wide linear distortion correction for the shooting, which means that the entire screen, edge line is still straight.

In terms of the image quality of the sensor, correcting distortion by optical means is much higher than correcting distortion in post-processing, which means that we should expect the UWA modules of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro to produce clearer images. Huawei was the first to adopt this technology, but it was only used on the ultra-high-end Mate 40 Pro+.

In the OnePlus 9 Pro, we also saw a 3.3x telephoto module with an 8-megapixel OV08a10 sensor. Compared with the native high-resolution mode of the main module, the quality of this sensor remains to be seen.

OnePlus 9: the same main camera

Compared with the 9 Pro, the display of the new regular OnePlus 9 is slightly shrunk. Its size is smaller, 6.55 inches, but it is not curved, and the width falls at 74.2mm. Although there is no curved surface to make it feel thinner, it is actually wider than the 9 Pro.

This is a 2400×1080 resolution screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. As we have seen in previous years, it is a relatively conventional panel technology. For this display to achieve higher energy efficiency at 120Hz, it must rely on software-based refresh rate switching.

At present, we do not have more details to explain how this phone is achieved. Judging from the back of the phone, the OnePlus 9 is very similar to OnePlus 9 Pro, except for the difference in-camera settings.

Finally, the highlight of the entire camera is in the software part. OnePlus has been marketing their collaboration with Hasselblad on the camera system, and they promise that this generation of color calibration will be better. We have seen this kind of cooperation in the market before, perhaps the most obvious is the cooperation between Huawei and Leica.

From the hardware co-design of the optical part to the actual image processing investment of the partner company. What kind of help will Hasselblad’s cooperation bring to OnePlus is temporarily unclear except for the more accurate color reproduction they promised, but at least it is hoped that this will bring better tone mapping, gamma curve and True color reproduction because this has been the biggest weakness in the past OnePlus camera implementations.

OnePlus 9R: Newly added budget-oriented model

In addition to the new 9 and 9 Pro, there is also a 9R, which seems to be a more budget-conscious device. In addition to the Snapdragon 870 SoC, this phone also uses the same display as the OnePlus 9 but has a very different camera.

The 48MP IMX586 main camera sensor and 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle. The camera configuration seems to be the same as last year’s OnePlus 8 and 8T, but a 5MP macro sensor is added to the mysterious 2MP monochrome unit. This machine The model just inherited the camera processing methods of the previous generation-and did not cooperate with Hasselblad.

The low-end model OnePlus 9R uses Qualcomm’s new overclocked version of the Snapdragon 865, called the Snapdragon 870-essentially a faster model of 865+, with a CPU frequency of up to 3.2GHz. It should be noted that the actual performance difference between this chip and the newer Snapdragon 888 in 9 and 9 Pro is quite small, so this is an effective way to build a more economical flagship device this year.
