YouTube expands the scope of Products in this Video testing

After inviting a small number of users to test in mid-2020, YouTube recently expanded the testing scope of the “Products in this Video” function. This feature can detect certain products that appear in the video and generate relevant video recommendations about the product.

YouTube wrote in a statement: “[March 22, 2021] Testing the auto-detected product list in the video. We are experimenting with a new feature that displays a list of products detected in some videos, as well as related products. The feature will appear between recommended videos and displayed to viewers scrolling below the video player. The purpose is to help people explore more videos and information about these products on YouTube. This feature will be visible to people watching videos in the United States.”

Below the main YouTube player, you will see a list of related products, and the related content of each item will be displayed in a prominent position. We guess this might appear like a banner ad, but with more interactive elements. After clicking, users will not be redirected to other websites but will see videos about the product, other channels and creators.

We guess that this can almost be used as an auxiliary recommendation tool. It is a supplement to the recommended video section that appears on the right side of the main video player. The YouTube algorithm has done a pretty solid job of automatically detecting what you’ve been watching and providing relevant videos, but it feels more focused on content that people use as pre-research before buying.
