Windows 10 began to deploy Edge WebView 2

Accoding to the Windows Latest report, Microsoft has now begun to install the WebView2 runtime on some Windows 10 PCs to improve the experience of Web applications when using certain services, such as Office applications, Outlook and Microsoft Teams.

According to Microsoft, WebView2 is a Web control built on Chromium Edge, and it is the successor of WebView based on EdgeHTML. Allow applications to access the latest web technologies, which means providing you with a better web experience and performance.

Microsoft Edge WebView2 is used as a rendering engine to display Web-related content in your Windows applications, and the next generation of Microsoft 365 services will also rely on it. For example, the Meeting Insights feature in Outlook requires WebView2, which will also provide support for Microsoft Teams “Alpha”. According to reports, a new desktop client will arrive later this year.

According to Microsoft’s official roadmap, the tool is only installed on PCs that use Microsoft 365 services. However, in the foreign media test, it was observed that Microsoft installed the “Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime” on the device where the Office 2016 student version was installed, and the Office 2016 student version does not belong to Microsoft 365.

Why do I need to install the WebView2 runtime on Windows 10?

By installing the WebView2 runtime on Windows 10, Microsoft will be able to provide users with Office features that look and feel the same in all form factors . According to Microsoft, the Edge WebView2 runtime will also ensure a “consistent experience” of web-based content/functions in Windows 10 applications.

It is worth noting that WebView2 is necessary for some Microsoft 365 applications and features, but it does not require Microsoft Edge to be installed, nor does it change your application, browser or search engine settings.

If it does not work on your PC, you will not be able to use all Microsoft products effectively.

This is why Microsoft wants to force the installation of the runtime, and there is no way to suspend the launch, unless you have accessed the Advanced Group Policy Editor. Remember, only PCs using Microsoft Office products will be affected, at least for now.
