Microsoft wants to unify the visual effects of Edge PWA and ordinary Windows 10 applications

For a long time, Microsoft has been trying to make up for the gap in applications of the Windows 10 operating system through “Progressive Web Applications” (PWA), and make it closer to the experience of native applications in terms of visual effects.

Interestingly, in a technical document disclosed recently, we saw Microsoft’s next plan. techTSP pointed out that the Edge PWA application will abandon the title bar and give full control of the area to the developer.

Amanda Baker of the Microsoft Edge team said: “This feature allows web application developers to make better use of screen space, allowing them to design it closer to native applications on the operating system.”

Obviously, as the portability of the device increases, the traditional title bar will occupy a larger display area on the screen, and the result is that the actual available space for the user to interact with is reduced.

In addition, for users with visual impairments, if the zoom level of all content on the screen is increased, the actual experience will be a more troublesome problem. The good news is that after the improvement, developers do not need to leave a large area of the title bar blank, but integrate the title bar of the application into the standard browser font, and use custom logos, search boxes, or navigation components. To fill the area.

At the same time, Microsoft intends to develop in-depth cooperation with Google to introduce a new window layout control (Windows Control Overlay) function to provide developers with more control over this area.

The following are the goals of Windows Control Overlay:

  • Allow web developers to access the title bar area of progressive web applications;
  • The application window must have basic control options such as minimizing, closing and dragging the window;
  • Edge browser can follow the window control design of the host system;
  • Bring visual effects and user experience as close as possible to native applications.
