Just like last year’s debut of the Pixel 4a, it is expected that Google will soon announce its successor, the Pixel 5a. Unfortunately, due to continued chip shortages, a leaker pointed out that a successor to the low-cost Pixel model may not come. Instead, Google will adopt another strategy to maintain sales of its smartphones.
According to Jon Prosser, Pixel 5a will not be available, but Google obviously has another plan. The company hopes to continue to sell Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G equipment, in order to continue the smartphones operational product line, but it might give Google more losses increase, because many customers waiting for Pixel 5a may not intend to be forced to spend money to buy the previous generation models.
However, Google may reduce the price of Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G to increase buying power. According to the previous rendering of Pixel 5a, this upcoming smartphone exhibits striking similarities with Pixel 4a 5G, including familiar designs such as dual rear cameras.

Google may intend to continue to use the Pixel 4a 5G chassis, add different “off the shelf” components, and give the new phone a different name. This is also a similar strategy adopted by Apple. The 2020 iPhone SE is based on the iPhone 8 shell but uses a different internal structure.
The latest rumors also emphasize that Google may not use its customized “Whitechapel” SoC on the Pixel 5a, but will retain the chip for the higher-end Pixel series, which is said to be coming later this year. Assuming that Google is not affected by the continued chip shortage and successfully launches Pixel 5a, we believe it will be equipped with Snapdragon 780G or Snapdragon 750G at least.
