Desktop Google Photos gains OCR capability, text can be copied from pictures

The website Google Photos application is about to gain OCR capability, which can scan the text content in pictures and convert them into a digital version that can be copied and pasted. Google Lens on the Android side has OCR function from a very early time, but this function will be fully launched on the website, making it more convenient for users to operate on the desktop side.

The OCR feature seems to be widely launched. To use this feature, you first need to open the Google Photos website, and then go to a photo containing text (such as a book, a sign, a receipt, etc.). After Google detects the text, a “Copy text from image” button will pop up. Clicking this button will open a window that displays the text recognized by OCR.

A practical application of putting Lens on the desktop can be to scan a written text document and paste it into what you write on your desktop computer. To test this, The Verge editor took a picture of this open book, and the result was almost perfectly recognized.
