Samsung may introduce Sensor Shift image stabilization for its flagship smartphone

A few days ago, it was reported that Samsung may reach a high-end camera brand Olympus to bring an enhanced shooting experience to future flagship smartphones. Now more details about this matter have surfaced. GalaxyClub pointed out that Samsung is considering introducing Sensor-Shift technology for some of its devices. As the name suggests, this movable sensor technology can greatly improve the image stabilization (photo/video anti-shake) experience of mobile devices.

As one of the methods of optical image stabilization, it uses MEMS actuators (rather than lenses) to stabilize the image. Interestingly, Sensor-Shift also happens to be a major feature of Olympus and its mirrorless camera product line.

In the high-end camera market, Sensor-Shift technology is also more flexible than lens-based optical image stabilization (OIS) solutions, allowing consumers to easily replace different lens components, which is very practical in scenes where a tripod is not used for shooting.

Of course, it can also be used as a supplement to traditional anti-shake technology (such as the five-axis) in some cases. Unfortunately, this technology has not yet been widely adopted in the field of mobile devices.

Apple has previously introduced Sensor-Shift technology on the iPhone 12 Pro Max flagship smartphone, but if the news is reliable, Samsung is likely to adopt it on a new generation of models (such as Galaxy Fold 3/Galaxy S22). The fly in the ointment is that Olympus sold its camera business to Japan Industrial Partners last year, but the cooperation with Samsung may continue.
