Facebook New Feature: Creators can make money through e-commerce channels

The CEO of American social networking giant Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that the company will start with Instagram and launch new features to help content creators generate revenue. Zuckerberg and the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri participated in a live video event, during which they made the above statement. He also said that in the entire e-commerce plan, a “creator shop” will also be launched.

Zuckerberg said that if fans buy products recommended by the creator, Facebook will provide them with a commission share. Regarding the commission share ratio and the specific time when this feature was launched, a Facebook spokeswoman did not disclose the details. Mosley said that the creators trading platform under preparation will help accounts with medium-sized fan bases to cooperate with manufacturers and brands so that they can earn income.

At present, in the social media “creator economy”, an increasingly worrying phenomenon has emerged, that is, income imbalances, leading authors or influential users earn a lot of income, and it is difficult for other small-scale authors to make ends meet. In this regard, Mosley said: “If we can match, then those small creators who can do excellent work for the brand will get more income.”

This content is actually part of Facebook’s “creator economy”. In this kind of Internet economy, social media platforms such as Clubhouse, Patreon, Substack, and YouTube are helping users such as influential figures on the platform to obtain economic benefits through massive fans.

These moves by Facebook are also to further catch up with the short video giant TikTok. Last year, Instagram launched a short video service “Reels” that competes with TikTok. TikTok has previously launched social e-commerce functions, such as live streaming to bring goods, so as to help video authors make profits.
