Windows 10 update fixes a critical bug that could disrupt backups

With the Windows 10 update in February, Microsoft broke two features, some users’ Intel webcams and file history backup tools. Although Microsoft acknowledged the problem with the webcam in a post in the Feedback Center, the company has never admitted that there is a problem with Windows 10’s built-in backup function.

For those who are unfamiliar, File History is a backup solution for Windows 10 that can save specific files or folders to the backup device. File History is an automatic backup tool, also known as a “backup solution that you forget after setting”. It requires you to have an external drive connected to your computer. By default, the file history is designed to automatically save files and folders to the connected device, and users can restore the previous version of the file at any time.

After users applied it in February, they found that the file history had quietly stopped working, and the size of the backup was displayed as “zero bytes”. Some people saw the vague error message “Your data has not been backed up.” In addition, users have also observed that the “Backup Now” button no longer works, and even if it is manually activated, the system files have never been backed up. In some cases, the following error message appears when the function crashes: “We could not copy files to your file history drive; failed to start using data backup (error 80070005)”.

In follow-up actions, users told us that although Microsoft did not admit that it had a problem, Microsoft may have fixed the problem. The file history seems to have been repaired with the April 2021 update of Windows 10, which means that the backup tool now works again in Build 19041.928, 19042.928, or later. Although the problem with the backup tool has been resolved for most users, it is still unclear when the tech giant will deploy a fix for Windows 10 compatibility issues with certain cameras.

According to the Feedback Hub’s post, Microsoft is currently aware of issues with Intel RealSense Depth and RAZER Stargazer cameras and is currently repairing them. If you have problems with your webcam, you can try the latest optional cumulative update, or uninstall the Windows 10 update. It is possible that Microsoft is still working on the camera issue, and we will hear some official news soon. In addition to these issues, it is believed that Microsoft is still making appropriate fixes for the observed performance issues in the April 2021 patch.
