Samsung is expected to provide a 120Hz display for iPhone 13 Pro models

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models have been widely rumored to use OLED displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz to make content and scrolling smoother, and more reports continue to surface. South Korean website The Elec reported today that Samsung will become the exclusive supplier of 120Hz displays for iPhone 13 Pro models.

At the same time, two high-end iPhones that will use RFPCB this year will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels. LTPO OLED is what Apple needs to achieve a 120Hz refresh rate screen, and these panels will be exclusively supplied by Samsung Display.

Multiple sources claim that after years of rumors, the iPhone 13 Pro model will eventually support a 120Hz refresh rate, including Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, display industry analyst Ross Young, well-known leakers Jon Prosser and Max Weinbach, among others.

According to reports, Apple’s use of low-power LTPO display technology will make 120Hz support possible. LTPO technology makes the backplane more power-saving. It is responsible for turning on and off individual pixels on the display, allowing it to achieve a 120Hz refresh rate at the same time. Battery life has a major impact. Similar to the recent Apple Watch models, LTPO can also enable the iPhone 13 model to have an always-on display that allows the clock to be visible at all times.

Since 2017, the iPad Pro model has supported refresh rates up to 120Hz. As part of a technology called ProMotion, it can automatically adjust the refresh rate based on the content. Various Android smartphones now have 120 Hz or higher display screens, so when the technology matures, it is necessary to let the iPhone support a higher refresh rate.
