MediaTek and Qualcomm will maintain the leading position in the smartphone chip market in 2021

In its latest analysis, Counterpoint Research predicts that mobile phone chip manufacturers such as MediaTek and Qualcomm will continue to dominate the market. The company calculated that MediaTek will gain 37% of the global chip market, but Qualcomm will still maintain its leading position in the 5G field. The expectation for 2021 is that MediaTek will gain an advantage over Qualcomm due to Samsung’s factory in Austin, Texas, around RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) supply restrictions.

In addition, the output of 5-nanometer wafers is generally small, and MediaTek does not even use such wafers, so this will not become Qualcomm’s advantage. In this competition, the biggest loser will be HiSilicon, which will be kicked out of the top five and replaced by Ziguang Zhanrui, also from China, a company known for producing ultra-low-cost chipsets for entry-level mobile phones.

The 5G market looks slightly different and dedicated 5G chipsets are becoming more and more common. Once the production bottleneck is eliminated, Qualcomm will be able to rebound strongly in the second half of 2021.

However, the battle for the top spot will become more intense than ever, because it is predicted that the difference between the top three players in terms of market share is actually very small. Almost 9 out of 10 5G smartphones will use chipsets from Qualcomm, Apple, or MediaTek, surpassing other competitors, such as Samsung’s Exynos chips.
