Google adds another new way to call Assistant

Google will soon make it possible for anyone to grab the attention of the Google Assistant by long-pressing the power button on phones. That feature was discovered in the code of the Google app.

Powerhead for Google Assistant

There are already many ways to wake up the Google Assistant on your phone. of course, you have the “Hey Google” and “Okay Google” commands, but it is also possible to hold down the home button on your phone. If you use gestures and no buttons, swipe up from one of the bottom corners of the screen. Some Nokia phones have a Google Assistant button and in older Pixel phones you can squeeze to bring up the Assistant.

In the latest developer preview of Android 12, it was discovered that it will soon be possible to press and hold the power button on your Android phone to call the Assistant. With such a function in the developer preview, however, you can never be completely sure whether it will also reach the stable version of Android 12, but now XDA developers have also discovered the feature in the code of the Google app. So it seems that Google has plans to roll it out faster than expected.

Nothing new

The fact that you just press the power button to call the Assistant will not be new to some, because Google was going to get the mustard at the software shell of some Chinese smartphone brands that have been using it for some time. The new gesture is still optional for users and in Android 12 you can activate it from the ‘Apps’ section in settings. In Android 11 this is ‘Apps and notifications’.

If you’re into your Android phone with the power button 11 depressed then it appears Power menu or the menu where you turn off your phone. On some devices, you also get access to handy buttons to control your smart home devices, while Samsung phones link Bixby to the action by default.
