New patent shows that Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come with touch-sensitive side buttons

Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 2 have always been benchmarks for foldable phones. The company has been leading the development of foldable phones, and it hopes that the upcoming devices will look more futuristic. It is reported that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be equipped with an under-screen camera, which means there will be no holes or notches.

Now 91mobiles has found a patent on the WIPO website that shows that the Samsung Galaxy Fold design has touch buttons on the side instead of physical buttons. According to the description of the patent, the physical buttons on a bar-shaped foldable device like the Galaxy Fold will cause users trouble.

In addition, pressing a physical button and applying force on one side of the housing may cause damage to the hinge. In order to solve this problem, the patent imagines a device similar to the Galaxy Fold, which uses touch-based virtual keys instead of physical keys to achieving various key functions without revealed buttons.

According to the patent picture, there can be touch-based buttons on the frame of the foldable phone for gesture control. When folded, the user can press and hold the two shells, and perform tasks such as increasing/decreasing the volume, locking/unlocking the phone, and so on by simply tapping or sliding.

By eliminating physical buttons, Samsung’s virtual buttons provide users with more areas and more comfort. The patent indicates that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, and possibly even the Galaxy Z Flip, may have touch-based buttons for gesture control.
