Chrome 90 crashes on Windows 10? Here is a temporary solution

As the most popular web browser in the world, Google Chrome has a large user base. But this also means that even relatively small problems can affect thousands of users. Windows Latest pointed out that recently many Chrome 90 browser users using the Windows 10 operating system have encountered headaches. At the same time, Chrome 90 on macOS and Linux platforms does not seem to be affected.

Some users reported in the official Google Chrome community that whether it is creating a new tab, trying to open Settings or Bookmarks, it may cause the Chrome 90 webpage to crash. Dozens of people at the bottom of the post replied that they encountered the same problem.

Fortunately, a Google product expert realized this within a few hours. He pointed out that the problem seems to be related to the user data directory where the current installation information is stored and suggested trying the Chrome Beta version to resolve the embarrassment.

As an extra step, you can try to re-run the Chrome installer to see if the current problem can be fixed. (The download address of the stable version is https://www.google.com/chrome). Considering that Google is officially aware of this problem, it is presumably the bug that Chrome 90 crashed on a Windows 10 PC that will be properly fixed soon.

But before that, users who want to continue to use the standard version of the Chrome browser on Windows 10 PCs may wish to refer to the following methods to avoid crashes:

  • Make sure that your sync data https://chrome.google.com/sync is correct and the password is also stored correctly on https://passwords.google.com.
  • Close all open Chrome instances.
  • Go to the path %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data in the file explorer.
  • Delete the Local State file in this directory (please make a backup beforehand if necessary).
  • Reopen the Chrome browser.

If you still can’t solve the problem, you can continue to try the following:

  • Go to the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data path in the file explorer.
  • Transfer all the contents in this directory to the desktop or other locations.
  • Rename the User Data folder to another name.
  • Reopen the Chrome browser.
