HomePod/HomePod Mini will support lossless music through software updates in the future

In the latest updated Apple support document, HomePod and HomePod Mini can play Apple Music’s lossless music through software updates in the future. When Apple Music just announced the release of lossless music, Apple stated that HomePod and HomePod Mini do not support lossless music, but support Dolby Atmos.

Dolby Atmos on Apple devices is also called Spatial Audio, which can create an immersive three-dimensional experience, making you feel like a musical instrument is playing around you. Lossless music provides a higher quality audio experience for Apple Music users.

There are two levels of lossless audio supported by Apple Music, including standard “lossless” audio up to 48 kHz and “Hi-Res lossless” audio up to 48kHz-192kHz. Apple says that “Hi-Res Lossless” will require external equipment, such as a USB digital-to-analog converter.

According to Apple, spatial audio and lossless audio will be available to all Apple Music users in June, and devices running iOS 14.6, iPad OS 14.6, macOS 11.4, and tvOS 14.6 or higher will be available at no additional cost.
