Report: Samsung’s OLED smartphone panel share will drop to 77% in 2021

As Chinese companies accelerate their investment in the OLED panel market, many manufacturers including BOE have begun to challenge Samsung’s dominant position in the global smartphone OLED panel market The competition will intensify.

Market research company Omdia said that smartphone OLED panel shipments will reach 812 million in 2022. Compared with the estimated 585 million unit shipments in 2021, this represents an increase of 38.8%. Especially starting from the iPhone 12 series in 2020, Apple has adopted OLED panels instead of LCD panels, so the use of OLED panels has surged.

Recently, Chinese display companies are entering the small and medium-sized OLED panel market, thereby increasing the supply of low-priced panels. Omdia estimates that Apple will use the largest number of OLED panels on smartphones next year.

It is estimated that 169 million OLED panels will be used in 2021, and 190 million OLED panels will be used in 2022. OLED panels may be used in new products scheduled to be released in the second half of 2021. Samsung is expected to use 155 million OLED panels in 2021 and 168 million next year, second only to Apple.
