Apple’s new trademark suggests macOS 12 may be called Monterey or Mammoth Lakes

Every new version of macOS has a new code name. It used to be a variety of cats, and since 2013, they have been named after attractions in California, USA. For example, Yosemite or the Mojave Desert. So it will be interesting to speculate what the next version might be called. Apple has quietly registered some place names, and they are likely to be used in the naming of macOS 12 in the future.

Apple registered several names using shell companies around 2013 and 2014 when they first tried to name macOS using California attractions. Yosemite, Sierra, El Cap, and Big Sur are all included in the same batch of trademarks.

As we all know, they all became the names of the new version of macOS. But perhaps for the sake of confidentiality, there are many useless names in this wave of names registered by Apple, including diablo, Condor, Tiburon, Farallon, Miramar, Rincon, Pacific, Redwood, Wait, we haven’t used or renewed the registration so far, and it seems to have been abandoned.

However, the registration of two of the names has recently been renewed, and it seems that they may become the codenames of the next version of the system, namely: Monterey and Mammoth. Mammoth was actually renewed by Apple on April 29 this year. This place obviously represents the California attraction of Mammoth Lakes. A ski resort town located near Sierra Mountain Lake, not far from Yosemite.

Monterey renewed its visa on December 29, 2020. As early as February, some people speculated that Monterey might be the name of the next version of macOS. There are several reasons: First, it is close to Big Sur. Apple also used nearby attractions to name the system in two years, such as Sierra and High Sierra.

Monterey, located 67 miles south of San Francisco, is also this routine. It may be the perfect name for the successor to Big Sur, expressing that Apple wants to perfect the major changes it made last year. Both of these names are possible. If this year’s macOS system is perfect from last year’s update, Monterey is a good choice; if it is a major version change, then the name Mammoth will be very suitable.
