App Store sales in 2020 increase 24% YOY to more than $600 billion

Apple said on Wednesday that according to a new study commissioned by the company, its App Store has promoted more than $600 billion in sales in 2020. This figure has increased by 24% over the previous year, as the COVID-19 has prompted many consumers to switch to mobile phones and tablets. The latest data comes at a time when Apple is facing increasing scrutiny due to the issue of the Apple tax draw.

The developers claim that the App Store platform is very unfair to small companies. Recently, Epic Games, the production company of the Fortnite game, sued Apple and claimed in court that the App Store is anti-competitive.

Apple denied these allegations and stated that it does not have a dominant market share in any category in which it conducts business and recently reduced the App Store’s commissions for small companies to 15%. In response to the lawsuit, Apple argued that the App Store’s rules are designed to ensure the quality and safety of applications.

The latest research includes transactions handled by Apple itself as well as purchases and other economic activities that occur through apps that Apple does not directly participate in. The report said that in 2020, about 90% of the total bills and sales facilitated by the App Store ecosystem occurred outside the platform, which means that Apple will not collect commissions from these sales.

According to this research, the sales of more than $6,000 through iPhone and iPad apps in 2020 are composed of the following components:

US$511 billion comes from physical goods and services sold through apps, of which US$383 billion comes from retail apps, US$38 billion comes from travel apps, and US$36 billion comes from food delivery and pickup;

  • $86 billion from digital goods and services;
  • $46 billion comes from in-app advertising.
