Google Maps will take us away from roads prone to accidents

Months ago, we learned that Google Maps, instead of giving us the fastest route, would suggest the one that is greener and uses less fuel. Now, in an effort to reduce accidents, the app will prevent drivers from crossing roads with abrupt braking, which of course causes accidents.

If a driver brake abruptly on the road, the car behind him may not be able to react and this will create a chain reaction of collisions. By avoiding these roads where there is a lot of sudden braking, Google hopes that we will see fewer accidents. According to Auto-Evolution, approx100 million such brakes can be avoided if Google Maps provides other alternative routes.

Google states: For example, if there is a sudden increase in abrupt braking at a specific time of day, where drivers will be facing the sun, our system will be able to detect it and provide alternative routes. The new feature will be available for both Android and iOS Google Maps users.

In order for the system to detect such abrupt changes in speed, the company uses sensors already in mobile phones. Accelerometers and gyroscopes can detect points on the road where there is a sharp deceleration. But Google says that if we rely only on these sensors, it can give the wrong alarm.

For example, if a cell phone is in a cup holder, it can very easily turn and move and give the impression that there has been some abrupt braking. To improve system accuracy, Google uses AI to analyze driver data, as well as other drivers who have crossed the same path, to confirm the occurrence of an event.
