Windows 10 settings application will usher in UI improvements

Since the introduction of the Settings application in the Windows 8 system, 8 years have passed. Even after the release of the Windows 10 system, the settings application is still in an optimized state, and the system still contains a control panel. This is because the modern settings application is in an “unfinished” state of development, and the most advanced options cannot be used.

As early as when the settings application was launched, Microsoft stated that Windows 10 would continue to include a control panel until the development of the settings application was completed. In recent years, Microsoft has gradually migrated the features in the control panel to the settings application. The entire project is very large and cannot be completed by one or two feature updates.

In the upcoming Windows 10 21H2 feature update, code-named Sun Valley, although it is not clear which features of the control panel will be migrated further, the settings application will receive new improvements in the user interface. It will be based on the company’s new design language, which means it will have an appropriate dark mode (instead of a black mode) and colorful icons.

Microsoft is designing new icons for various core options in the settings application. The idea is to put a touch of Fluent Design color on the options such as Windows Update in the Settings application and to add color to the icons that are currently in use that look rather plain.

The new version of the settings application should not bring fundamental changes, but it does change the user experience through some colorful icons and a reorganized layout. Like the control panel, the settings application will also have a navigation menu, with all the main options on the left, such as update and security, personalization, Bluetooth, etc. These options will be visible when you navigate between different pages of the settings application.

The updated settings application will also introduce new options to manage the operating system. For example, Microsoft is developing a new settings page to help you personalize your touch keyboard and multitasking control. A new feature in the multitasking settings page will allow you to have a separate virtual desktop for each monitor. This means that additional monitors can have their own virtual desktops, even if you switch between virtual desktops on the main monitor or vice versa, it will not be affected.
