Apple greatly expanded the privacy features of mail applications, browsers, and Siri

During the keynote speech at the WWDC 2021 Developer Conference held on June 8, Katie Skinner, head of Apple’s privacy developers, and Erik Neuenschwander, head of software, highlighted the new privacy features that span the entire Apple ecosystem. First of all, Craig Federighi, Apple’s vice president of software engineering, pointed out that the company insists that privacy is a basic right of users, and therefore hopes that everyone does not have to worry about making trade-offs between excellent features and privacy protection.

Craig Federighi added: “Privacy today is more important than ever because when you use the Internet and third-party applications, you are very likely to be tracked by a complex data broker/ad technology company system. In this case, the user’s permission is often not obtained in advance, but everyone should not accept their fate.”

Then, Katie Skinner, head of Apple’s privacy engineering, started talking about email services and pointed out that emails are often used to carry out hidden pixel-level information collection. She said: “We believe that users have the right to choose whether to be tracked, so a unique privacy protection mechanism (ie Mail Privacy Protection) has been introduced into the mail application.”

When this function is enabled, the related function will hide the user’s IP address and prevent the sender from knowing whether and when the user has opened a particular email. Then, Apple Software Director Erik Neuenschwander mentioned how to deal with the cross-site tracking problem in the Safari browser: “Safari has long been an industry leader in protecting users from cross-site tracking and intelligent tracking prevention.”

Now, Apple has further expanded the privacy experience of Safari users by hiding the user’s IP address from the tracker. As a result, the tracker will no longer be able to use this set of solutions to link the user’s activities on different sites or to know where the user is.

It is worth mentioning that Apple also released an App Privacy Report, the content format is similar to the existing Safari Privacy Report. Finally, Skinner and Neuenschwander mentioned the so-called major update of Siri’s privacy features.

Today, we officially introduced the voice recognition function based on native devices. This means that by default, all the audio processing work of the user can be done on the iPhone or iPad, thus solving the biggest privacy dispute about voice assistants— — That is, there is no need to record anymore.

In other words, this allows users to continue to use Siri’s smart assistant in the absence of an Internet connection, and the speed experience is also improved.
