Android 12 conversation widget hidden feature

A few days ago, Google released the second beta version of Android 12. It brings one of the most exciting features of the new version of the system: automatically change the background color according to your wallpaper. After digging into the new version, the XDA also discovered the highly anticipated Conversations widget, and its background can be changed according to the content of the information.

The Conversations widget in Android 12 Beta 2 displays the contact’s avatar, name, and the content of the last message. Twitter user Neil Rahmouni broke the news to foreign media XDA, saying that certain text in the message can trigger the change of the background of the Conversations widget. When the user receives a message containing 2 or more exclamation marks, the background of the gadget is suddenly filled with semi-transparent exclamation marks.

XDA confirms that when a message contains 2 or more exclamation points, the dialog widget will indeed change its background. We also found that when the message contains 2 or more question marks, or if there are mixed question marks and exclamation marks, the background also changes. In addition, when an emoji is reused, the background will also change.

Deeply studying the System UI of Android 12 Beta 2, XDA learned that the PeopleTileViewHelper class uses regular expressions to check certain patterns in the information. If there are two or more exclamation marks, two or more question marks, a mixture of question marks and exclamation marks, or two or more same emoji, then the text/emoji will be applied to the background of the widget.

To be sure, this is a small feature, but it is a good feature because it will definitely attract your attention. The code shows that the dialog widget will also display the contact’s birthday, anniversary, “story” update, in-game status, location, etc., but we haven’t seen this feature yet.
