Samsung Display labor union announces strikes one after another from next week

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Samsung Display union decided to strike from the 21st after announcing the breakdown of the salary increase negotiations. This will be the first strike since Samsung Display was established, and it will also be the first strike by Samsung’s subsidiaries after Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jay-Yong announced the abolition of the principle of union-free operation last year.

The trade union stated on the 16th that the six cadres of the Labor Dispute Mediation Committee and others will go on strike early on the 21st, and then gradually increase their struggle. On the first day of the strike, the labor union will hold a labor dispute committee departure ceremony at the company’s second plant in Asan and will condemn the management’s negotiating attitude.

At the beginning of this year, the labor union asked for a wage increase of 6.8%, but the management insisted on implementing the 4.5% increase reached before the labor-management consultation meeting. Face-to-face negotiations between the chairman of the union and the company president failed to narrow the differences, and the final negotiations at the beginning of this month also broke down, so the union decided to strike.

More than half of the members in the union voted in favor of the strike, and the Central Labor Committee of the Ministry of Employment and Labor also recognized the status of “mediation terminated” and the union has the legal right to strike. The Samsung Display Labor Union was established in February last year and is affiliated with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions. It currently has more than 2,400 members, accounting for more than 10% of the company’s total employees.
