Disappearing photos and videos are now available in WhatsApp Beta

WhatsApp now has a new feature that lets you send photos and videos that automatically disappear. The recipient can view them once, and as soon as he or she leaves the screen, they are gone.

View photos and videos once

Since last year you can give your messages an expiration date in WhatsApp. You can have the messages in a conversation automatically deleted after seven days. Since that time, parent company Facebook has been working on a similar function for photos and videos sent in conversations and that function is now being rolled out, WABetaInfo reports.

Mark Zuckerberg calls the feature View Once and the recipient of the photos and videos can only view them once before they disappear from the chat. That should provide more privacy. Something similar is also already present in Instagram’s private messages, and there is the feature called View once. The feature has now arrived at the editors in version 2.21.14.3 of WhatsApp Beta and you can set the function via the steps below:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Open a chat and tap the paperclip and then Camera or Gallery to add a photo or video to the conversation
  • In the box at the bottom of the Add caption box, tap the icon with the ‘1’ in the middle
  • Your photo or video is now set up for one-time viewing and the recipient can only view the photo or video once

More privacy?

The feature does not immediately provide more privacy because you can still take screenshots of the photo or video that is set to one-time display. So it’s a false sense of security, and hopefully, WhatsApp will prevent the ability to take screenshots in a future update. Another option is to inform the sender if the recipient takes a screenshot.
