WhatsApp will use less mobile data if you share videos

WhatsApp will soon let you choose the upload quality of videos when you share them. This is done with a new selection menu, and the intention is to save mobile data. The feature is still in development and it may be part of the WhatsApp beta soon.

WhatsApp upload quality videos

WhatsApp will give users the choice with which quality they want to share their videos. A selection screen will appear where you can choose whether you want to upload files with ‘Best quality’ or ‘Data saving mode’. As a third option, there is an automatic mode where WhatsApp itself determines which compression algorithm is best suited for the video in question.

The information comes from WABetaInfo, and that rumor propagator is remarkably sparse with details. For example, it is not known whether the selection screen that we see in the screenshot below appears every time you upload a video, or whether it concerns a fixed menu from the settings. It seems to be the second one.

Many Questions

We also don’t know yet how much mobile data you can save with the Data Saver Mode compared to the Best Quality. It seems that at least there will always be some form of compression, even for short videos.

In addition, there is also the question of how WhatsApp automatically determines whether video files are greatly reduced. it mainly depends on the video file itself, or WhatsApp also checks if you are connected to wifi or mobile data.

The feature is currently still in development and will probably appear in one of the next releases of WhatsApp Beta. We may then get an answer to all those questions.
