Samsung urges Galaxy Gear smartwatch users to upgrade to the new Tizen platform

Although Samsung is one of the early players in the smartwatch market, the South Korean technology giant did not use Google’s native Android Wear wearable operating system on the Galaxy Gear launched in 2013 but chose its own customized Tizen platform.

However, as the relationship with Google improves, we are about to usher in the latest Wear OS wearable system on the new Galaxy Watch 4 series. At the same time, Samsung is also urging old users to migrate to the new platform.

As a device that has been delayed for 8 years, we were quite surprised to hear that Samsung is still providing support for Galaxy Gear users. SamMobile pointed out that Samsung is still operating the Tizen app store, but related services will end in August this year, but this does not mean that Galaxy Gear will be completely bricked.

Samsung mentioned in its update notice to watch users that the company will close the app store for Galaxy Gear devices on August 5, 2021. After that, Samsung smartwatch users could not access the Galaxy Store immediately. However, as long as the update is selected (the subsequent downgrade is not possible), the Galaxy Gear can still continue to receive support.

Although not all Galaxy Gear apps will be used on the new Tizen platform, Samsung is likely to provide apps with similar functions.
