Last week, the Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital revealed a new design patent for a clamshell folding screen smartphone that Xiaomi had obtained and speculated that it might be the legendary MIX Flip, corresponding to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Moto Razr (2019).
However, it didn’t take long before we saw another patent filed by the company. It can be seen that the illustration shows a folding screen device with a large display area, and the front side and the internal flexible screen are seamlessly connected at the edge.
On February 24, 2020, Xiaomi submitted this design patent application to the National Intellectual Property Office (CNIPA) and officially announced it to the outside world on July 6, 2021. It contains 21 photos showing the device from various angles. Close-up image.
It is worth mentioning that there are two carefully colored images in the document, suggesting that Xiaomi may have carefully thought about how to build this concept device. Like MIX Fold, the device also uses an inward-folding flexible screen design, but the side has been seamlessly penetrated to the other side.

When folded, the device can only display the Cover Display part of the facade. When fully extended, users can easily watch various content or experience interaction with the large screen that folds inward.
We are not unfamiliar with the design of the surround screen, because Xiaomi has already used it on the MIX Alpha concept device. In order to facilitate holding and accommodating larger devices such as the camera, the side of the fuselage has a thicker frame.
However, in the case of storage, it can also provide better protection for the machine’s screen. In addition, the switch key seems to be located in the fuselage, the stereo speakers are separated at the top and bottom, and the USB-C charging/data port is also located at the bottom of the fuselage.
If the rumors are reliable, we may see the new folding screen smartphone released by Xiaomi in the fourth quarter of 2021. As for whether it is like this described in this article, it is still to be officially announced.
