Microsoft’s new Office user interface is now available for testers

Microsoft has begun testing its new Office design today. The company initially announced the design changes for Office last year and then revealed last month that Office’s new UI design is to match the redesigned Windows 11 operating system. Before making it available to all Microsoft 365 users later this year, Office insiders can now access the new user interface for testing.

The main changes are the rounded appearance of the Office ribbon bar, and some minor adjustments to the buttons in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Microsoft initially foretold more drastic changes to its Office user interface, including the use of more command bars instead of the traditional ribbon interface.

At least for now, Microsoft is gradually making subtle changes to its Office design, rather than completely abandoning the ribbon interface. Microsoft is still working on adaptive commands, and will eventually see Office’s functional area interface replaced by a non-fixed, unlockable toolbar to show the operations in the document.

These changes first appeared on the web and mobile versions of Office, followed by major design adjustments to major desktop versions such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Microsoft said last year that these changes may take a year or two to roll out, so we are only now starting to see the first changes for Windows 11.

The updated Microsoft Office interface is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 testers. To try it first, you first need to be a member of the Office Insiders group and set up to receive test channel updates in Office settings. After the update is complete, an icon that looks like a megaphone at the top of the Office application allows you to switch the new user interface on or off.
